The Erasmus+ project ‘‘Troy - a youth exchange about war’’ held from October 12 to 22, 2023, on Aegina Island, Greece, was an immersive and transformative experience that delved into the heart of Greek mythology through Live Action Roleplay. Although the overall theme was centered around Greek mythology, the project featured a unique twist that brought the myths to life in a dynamic and unforgettable manner.
In this project, participants had the opportunity to create and inhabit five distinct kingdoms, each dedicated to one of the Greek gods: Aphrodite, Artemis, Athena, Dionysos and Medusa. These kingdoms were not merely symbolic, as each had its own monarch and six other characters: prince, princess, master of coin, grand master, warrior, and Trojan horse. Participants embraced their roles and the project's theme with immense enthusiasm and dedication. The LARP element of the project became a powerful tool for participants to explore the complex relationships, conflicts, and narratives of Greek mythology. They not only adopted their roles but also allowed their characters to evolve and develop, creating a rich and immersive experience. One of the most notable aspects of this project was the level of passion and seriousness with which participants approached their roles and the overarching storyline. Every day presented a new challenge for the kingdoms to overcome. In “The Apple challenge” the kingdoms had to creatively explain the meanings of wisdom, beauty and love. “The Helen of Troy” put light on the topic of Women in War which was especially emotional for the Ukrainians. The day before the project's conclusion, a pivotal event took place where "Zeus" sacrificed two individuals from each of the five kingdoms. The emotional response from the participants was so authentic that it left everyone mourning as though they had genuinely lost members of their community. Still the project ended on a happy note as the last day we prepared for and wed 10 happy couples to strengthen the bonds between the five kingdoms and bring everlasting peace to the realm. In summary, the project not only deepened our understanding of Greek mythology but also left them with lasting memories and a profound appreciation for the power of storytelling and cultural exchange.
